Out of curiosity....

If for whatever reason you found yourself living post apocalypse what would you miss most?
Im talking about the little things so imagine that your friends and family have survived, you found yourself a nice tent/abandoned house/ supermarket to live in, plenty of things to help you stay warm and had a fully stocked wardrobe. There are no convenience stores so you can only have what you can make/grow/recycle, what skills would you want to have to make sure you could make or source?
Emma would miss her straighteners, i would miss eyeliner, tobacco, bread and wine (although i would probably be so excited about the whole thing these may not count lol)
What skills or items would be on your lists to survive in a health happy post apocalypse?

Reverb10 01/02 catchup

December 1 One Word.
Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you?
(Author: Gwen Bell)

For the past 8 years I think I've procrastinated my way through life with commitment to nothing specific, i was wandering through courses, education, jobs, plans, ideas. This year everything seems to have settled into a very solid base layer. My family is solid and fabulous, my job is solid and gives me pride and i finally feel that i might just get to the end of an undergraduate degree without getting bored and dropping out.

2011: Smooth
I'd like my plans to come together and have a year that runs nice and smoothly. Im not saying i don't like challenges but there are challenges and then there are *challenges* Ive just finished reading the Survivor Club and the internet based Survivor Profiler put me as a "resilient realist". which means that either i will learn and grow from adversity or perish because i believe in no higher power lol :)

December 2 Writing.
What do you do each day that doesn’t contribute to your writing — and can you eliminate it?
(Author: Leo Babauta)

I'm not a writer per se so I'm not necessarily writing every day. I am however slogging my way through an open university under grad degree in health and social care and the majority of the work is writing essays. Even if i love the course material i really struggle with keeping momentum when im writing. Everything and anything can prevent me from writing. There always seems to be something more interesting to do rather than 1000 words on "qualitative and quantitative studies of Pakistani and Indian migrants in Scotland and their diabetes care" or "the value of the subjective and objective in mental health diagnosis" The Internet has a huge lure for me to browse the crap rather than write, and currently, so does baking. Its always much worse if there are other people in the house or if there is noise of any description. I cant eliminate the Internet because lots of the research is web based i just need to find some discipline! Noise and other people i cant eliminate either as that would be quite rude. I'm trying to learn to be able to write while listening to music which is having mixed success. I'm 100% more self disciplined and focused than previous years but I'm still easily distracted!

i am watching the swimming world championships. i really need to start exercising. i have been lazy
emma is doing really well, she has only 1 line left in her hand and is now off the morphine. She can mobilize using a frame and can take herself to the loo and back. She has to be able to pass the OT tests of "getting in/out of a car" and "managing in the kitchen" before they will discharge her. We are hoping wednesday but it might be a bit later than that. We snuck out of the bay and used a shower chair to wash her hair and she could dress into her day clothes herself today so i think all is well again :)

Our bed is too low according to the physiotherapist so at some point i now have to add several inches to each of the legs and procure a 19.5" high chair from somewhere. Im hoping hoping that i can beg to borrow one from work but we shall see about that!

Im absolutly exhausted, because of a little snow today (people seemed genuinly shocked to see it. ITS WINTER!!!) it took 8 hours round trip to spend 2 1/2 hours with em today. Im hoping that the trains are running ok in the morning. But will be glad when she is back where i can look after her here and not be loosing days on trains!

Off to cook some 'ready meals' to pop in the freezer so she doesnt have to stress when she is back and as i food snob i object to tinned meals and processed food ;)

...maybe i'll have some more rum first...

what a day...

sorry if you read this twice!

a message dictated from em...

"Firstly thank you very much for all your kind messages. My mobile signal is a bit rubbish so sorry that i couldn't reply to everyone. I had my operation this afternoon and all has gone very well. I'm currently lying in a bay wit 5 'nans' called things like Phylis, Jean Pat etc.
Everyone here is very excited about the prospect of more potatoes for dinner, as you may have noticed from my status update, they fed me vegetable lasagna... Who in their right mind would look at a bag of frozen root vegetables and serve them with very stodgy pasta and the most floury cheese sauce in the world. Just in case they were worried about my carb intake at this point, they served all that with a jacket potato the size of a newborn triplet. I did my best.
The sensation is coming back to my toes and I will put makeup on tomorrow. I promise.
Lots of love
xxx "

Now from me...
Em went up late from surgery. Half 1 instead of 11am so there was a bit more waiting than expected! As the first bit of her stay was in a private, en-suite room i did manage to get some kissing and chatting (and weeping) in through the window by sneaking round the back of the hospital. No one ever told me how difficult kissing through safety guarded windows is. Mostly dodging peacocks rather than security tho!
She was in theater and recovery for all of an hour and a half. and was very perky (and hungry) straight after. She enjoyed being turned slightly too much ;) Im sure that she will tell you all about the beautiful Nadine when she is back. I'll not tell you here to keep you reading but will say that women like that are dangerous in rooms full of lesbians ;)

As of right now she can move her feet a bit (she had a spinal, not a general anesthetic) she hasn't played with the morphine button and is probably playing on Animal Crossing or allowing the 'nans' to nanify her. (Im under instruction to take her crochet tools tomorrow...)
Nurses don't make very good patients it seems! i have some photos ( im kind like that) which i will post after a rum or two! It will be nice to sleep in my own bed rather than the nurses halls of "residence" I will buy them extra chocs after seeing that slum.

Thank you so much to everyone from both of us for all the support and nice messages and I'll try getting her to make a video in the morning :D

quite amazing how much something like this can make you realise how much you love someone. maybe i'll make an honest women of her one day ;)

goodnight all

advice post and yet another stupid chemical* thing.....

Never absent mindedly smell a bottle of ammonia. I bought it to cycle the filter on my shiny shiny new fish tank, got it home opened bottle and for some un-knowable reason thought it would smell of something. it did: pain. :D

in other news.... NOODLE HAS BEEN DONE woes for the stop codon in his genetic line!!! It had to be done tho as *that* earhair would have been a dead giveaway for various "whos the daddy" comments in an estate full of unneutered bling wearing laydeecats...
He is currently very groggy from the anesthetic and very attention seeking as im guessing his new lack of testicleeees is making him feel somewhat sorry for himself!

We are once again in the midst of an arctic blast which is not very well for me going running as im not such a fan of the cold and having just come off a 45 hour week at work i cant quite honestly be arsed!

xmas shopping is all nearly done and im a bit shocked at how practical i can be. well sometimes anyway...

more soon and new fruit if i survive playing with the chemicals

* when i was younger during one of the "drag the science kids out for parents evening" i managed to dip my hand in hydrochloric acid then *take off* the safety goggles and wipe my eye with it. Cue a trip to a & e. Believe it or not i was once regarded as a child genius when it came to science. This is what pressure does to you :D oh and vodka ;)

stupid things to do 003

there coming thick and fast this year!

stupid thing number 003.....
go to make posh tea using a percolator caffitiere thingo, forget that you normally use the larger one and as a result have neglected to clean out the little one is too long a time.
Act dramatically shocked and gasp when pulling plunger lid out and as a result... inhale a lungful of mold spores!
I have a notoriously weak chest esp when it comes to bacterial and viral infections so we shall see if the mold has any effect while i live the dream of *being* science in my own experiment where I am the petri dish! Does now being a non-smoker improve not only my endurance but also my resistance? How did i make it through childhood?
You really have to love science dont you???

stupid things to do 001/002

being 25 and 2 days old now i have decided to keep a log of all the Stupid Things i do for a whole year.

adj. stu·pid·er, stu·pid·est
1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake.
4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied.
5. Pointless; worthless: a stupid job.

A stupid or foolish person.

i think my class of stupid would be the noun use and possibly adjective (1)/(2) leaving those close to me as number (4)

My definition is anything which could involve injury, death, disfigurement or loss of limb*

Stupid 001
Get up and leave for work at 7am in a downpour only to discover that the hillside and road are 6"-10" under water. Keep cycling.
Stupid 002
Go for a run after work knowing full well that your town is underwater. Run down a hillside that was once not a river, go over a bridge thats 1' underwater. run a mile concrete track under varying depths of water ranging from 1" to thigh deep (obviously less running involved there) Run back through above obstacles**. Enjoy the experience immensely.

In other news...
theres no more weird fruit at the green grocers
I didnt get promoted but they will give me the pay rise accorcing to which shifts i am effectivly working the promoted position. Fair enough.
Im hoping that em will be given a date for biomecanising at the hospital tomorrow.

*if this ever happens i (and several friends also associated with this pact) will be having a dinnerparty serving said limb.

**Save a leech which has become marooned on the upper path.

Oranges Are *Not* The Only Fruit 002

*the guy who has effectively being trying to bully me at work has been found out to be a serious liability. FINALLY
*I was dragged into deputy managers office (cue paranoia "i need to speak to you" should be banned as a phrase) to be told that i will be getting promoted to acting senior care as soon as deputy gets an email from regional manager saying that's ok as ive been doing the job anyway and therefore should be recognized and given according pay bump WOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I was so excited i phoned em from a cupboard!
*All hell broke loose in the afternoon but i TOTALLY coped!
* I made it home in about 10 minutes after flying down the hill woop!
